Hybrid-drive revolution
Ferretti Group announces its most advanced production motor yacht.
The Ferretti Group has announced what is possibly the most important advance in production motor yachts for 50 years – the hybrid-drive Mochi Long Range 23.
This new diesel-electric ‘clean energy' hybrid drive system is the product of an extensive programme of development by Ferretti's AYT (Advanced Yacht Technology) division, in collaboration with leading specialists in electric power technology.
Using a combination of diesel engines, electric motors, inverters, generators and lithium-ion batteries, the new boat is almost certainly the most energy-efficient yacht of its size afloat. Its versatility extends from cruising at up to 16 knots under conventional diesel power, to virtually silent, emission-free running and harbour manoeuvres under its two 70kW electric motors.
The Italian Ship Register, RINA, has extended is existing Green Star certification to create a new voluntary standard: Green Star Clean Energy - Clean Propulsion. With this new revolutionary boat, Ferretti is the first company to be awarded the new certification. In addition to its hybrid propulsion system, the 75ft Mochi has a radical new, high- efficiency, semi displacement hull. Full details are yet to be revealed, but it is known to have a bulbous bow, and deep propeller tunnels that create an effect somewhat like a triple-hull section at the stern. As well as delivering energy-efficient performance, the shape enables the boat to take the ground fully upright.
Main engine options for the new Mochi are twin 550hp or twin 800hp MAN diesels. At a cruising speed of 9 knots, it is estimated that these will give her a range of 1520nm and 1500nm respectively. The Long Range 23 is also fitted with the Ferretti Group’s exclusive ARG gyroscopic stabilisers as standard, for reduced rolling at rest and under way. This is truly a vision of the future in motor yacht technology. With its unique hull, hybrid drive and ARG stabilisers, there is little doubt that the sensation of cruising aboard the new Mochi will be an astonishing and unique experience.
