The Orkney Isles, comprising 70 islands in total, provides some of the finest cruising grounds in Northern Europe. The Main Island, incorporating the ancient port of Kirkwall, is the largest, although 16 others have lively communities and are rich in archaeological sites as well as spectacular scenery and wildlife. Kirkwall Marina is due to open around October 2003 and will offer excellent facilities along with 24hr access and good shelter. The site is very close to the historic Kirkwall, whose original town is one of the best preserved examples of an ancient Norse dwelling.
