The Royal Northumberland Yacht Club is based at Blyth, a wellsheltered port that is accessible at all states of the tide and in all weathers except for when there is a combination of low water and strong south-easterly winds. The yacht club is a private club with some 75 pontoon berths and a further 20 fore and aft moorings. Visitors usually berth on the north side of the most northerly pontoon and are welcome to use the clubship, HY Tyne ? a wooden lightship built in 1880 which incorporates a bar, showers and toilet facilities. The club also controls its own boatyard, providing under cover and outside storage space plus a 20 ton boat hoist.
