Poplar Dock was originally designed and constructed to maintain the water level in the West India Docks. Nowadays, with Canary Wharf lying to the west and the Millennium Dome to the east, it has been converted into London's newest marina and was officially opened by the Queen in June 1999. Canary Wharf, boasting as many as 90 shops, bars and restaurants, is just a five minute walk away, while slightly further north of this is West India Quay, where Grade I listed warehouses have been converted into waterside eating places, a 12- screen cinema and fitness centre.
