On the west bank of the River Hamble, Port Hamble is the closest marina to the picturesque Hamble Village, therefore proving extremely popular with visiting yachtsmen. However, with no dedicated places for visitors, berthing availability is often scarce in the summer and it is best to contact the marina ahead of time. Besides exploring the River Hamble, renowned for its maritime history which began as far back as the ninth century when King Alfred's men sank as many as 20 Viking long ships at Bursledon, other nearby places of interest include the 13th century Netley Abbey, allegedly haunted by Blind Peter the monk, and the Royal Victoria Country Park.
